Summary

Extensive reading (ER) is widely recognised in the academic literature as being beneficial to second language acquisition. Can it however help to increase the scores on standardised tests like the paper-based TOEFL? In a qualitative survey of some 564 students this paper found that the results are moot at best. For students in a TOEFL based learning program to benefit from ER requires close attention to the program orientation, as well as monitoring of students and the selection of ER materials.
