Japanese airports and decentralization of international visits: current circumstances and future potential
In 2016 Japan launched the New Tourism Strategy to Invigorate the Japanese Economy with the aim of promoting regional development while enhancing the tourism potential of Japan's hinterlands. However since most international visitors arrive at one of two major conurbations (Tokyo and Osaka) decentralization is limited. One way to enable decentralization is increased utilization of Japan's regional airports. This paper examines the current international profiles of Japan's regional airports and considers their existing infrastructure. Figures indicate that with the cooperation of localities, regional airports in japan can be used as part of a strategy to boost local economies and reduce tourism stresses elsewhere.
