W.G. Astonの A Short Grammar of the Japanese Spoken Language の初版と第二版、第三版を検討した。第二版と第三版には内容上の違いがないことを確認した上で、初版と第二版での名詞と代名詞の説の発展について、いわゆる人称代名詞の体系の変化や、のちの版と文語文典で見られる指示詞の論の基礎が初版と第二版で現れていることなどを明らかにした。
