ポリアミンが特別な種類の蛋白質合成を促進する可能性を、大腸菌のポリアミンを要求性突然変異体の使用により検討した。幾種かの蛋白質の合成が、ポリアミンを添加したとき、著しく促進された。ポリアミンによる全蛋白質合成の促進は、Mr 62K(PI蛋白質)のポリアミンに惹起された蛋白質の合成に続いて起きた。PI蛋白質を均質に精製し、 MS2 RNAに依存の蛋白質合成系に添加すると、1mM のspermidineが存在下で， RNAレプリカーゼの合成を2.2倍促進することが示された。
