The authors discovered glyoxalase I as a protein that specifically responds to nitric oxide when vascular endothelial cells are oxidatively damaged by nitric oxide, and we also clarified that the intracellular glutathione-dependent conformational change with decreased activity. This review summarizes the structure and function of glyoxalase I.
