Magnetic refrigeration, based on the magnetocaloric effect of magnetic materials, is environmentally friendly and more efficient compared with conventional gas compression/expansion cooling technology. It has been used for obtaining extremely low temperature since 1933. Magnetic refrigeration has gained renewed interest since the discovery of giant magnetocaloric effect and the potential to commercial near room temperature applications. In this article, academic background and characterization of magnetocaloric effect is introduced and iron-based magnetocaloric materials with near room Curie temperature are reviewed.
