Formation of cyclopentaveratrylene, i.e., 10,15,20,25-tetrahydro-2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18,22,23-decamethoxy-5H-pentabenzo[a,d,g,j,m]cyclopentadecene, as byproduct was reported earlier. A selective synthesis of cyclopentaveratrylene (I) starting from 3,4-bis(6-bromoveratryl)veratrole or 3,4-diveratrylveratrole was achieved.
