Soft magnetic materials play a significant role in modern electrical and electronic equipment. They are used in almost every device related to electricity: smartphones, PCs, electric generators, aerospace equipment and so on. These materials are used from direct current and low-frequency to high frequency, even up to 500 GHz in alternating current. The application fields include transformers, inductors, switch mode power supplies, electric motors, magnetic shielding, electromagnetic pole-pieces, signal transmitters and receivers. In this article, soft magnetic materials, iron/low-carbon steel, Fe–Si steels, Sendust alloys, Fe–Co-/Fe–Ni-based alloys, soft ferrites, amorphous/nanocrystalline alloys, and newly developed high-entropy soft magnetic alloys are reviewed.
