アラスカ先住民グイッチンは、野生生物保護区内での石油開発計画に対し、カリブーの生息環境が破壊され狩猟文化が脅かされるとして反対運動を展開している。開発反対集会では伝統的方法に則って合意形成を行うが、法廷などでは非先住民的論理に則った交渉を行う必要があるため、運動を展開するうえで様々な文化的社会的困難が生じている。また、運動の過程でカリブーが文化伝統の象徴となっていること、集会自体が社会的紐帯の更新、アイデンティティの高揚にも寄与していることを指摘した。
