バクテリアは1つの機能に対して多数のシステムを持っている。例えば、大腸菌は4つK+取り込みシステム、4つのNa+放出システムおよび多くのCa2+/H+アンチポーターを持っている。異なるシステムが異なる環境条件の下で作動していると提案し、異なる外部pH条件では陽イオン輸送方式が異なることを実証した。
