大腸菌にはナトリウムイオンを排出する輸送系が3種あることが知られている。なぜ3種もの輸送系が必要であるのかは謎であった。本論文では3種の輸送系のうち1つのみ持つ大腸菌を作り、それぞれの輸送系の活性を各pHで測定した。その結果、各輸送系は異なるpHで働くことがわかった。このように、大腸菌は使う輸送系を変えることにより、外部環境のpH変化に対処していることがわかった。
