Various derivatives of 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium were synthesized and their effects on the reactive oxygen production and growth of Escherichia coli were investigated. From this study, it was clarified that there is a good correlation between the oxidation-reduction potential of a compound and its ability to increase reactive oxygen species.
