授業の到達目標及びテーマ
This is an introductory course and students will learn about current trends in Japanese popular culture. We will examine Japanese popular culture, including its history, its artists, and its institutions. In addition, we will study how Japanese popular culture has influenced the gaming and music industries globally. This course is designed to be interactive so students are expected to participate fully in classroom activities and discussions.
This class will be conducted in English, so students must have enough command of the English language to engage in class discussions. All content in this class will also be conducted in English. However, we will be looking at fragments of Japanese manga, scenes from anime, game screens, etc. in English, and some knowledge of Japanese may help in understanding the content. (If we view films in languages other than English we will use English subtitles.) 授業の概要
This class consists of three main components. In the first session, students will learn about Japanese music. We will analyze the patterns of Japanese music, chord progressions, and lyrics. In the second session, students will learn about Japanese manga and anime. We will classify and analyze Japanese anime works by category. We will also analyze the structure of the Japanese media industry. In the third session, we will look at Japanese games and Japanese TV programs. We will analyze the current Japanese game industry.
