授業の到達目標及びテーマ
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1) Apply the knowledge of the past four quarters - or the equivalent in terms of their experience from study abroad programs and/or self-study - and develop intermediate to high level proficiency in French.
2) Express themselves orally and in writing on the topics beyond their personal world, and understand temporal nuances in terms of facts, forecasts, and possibilities.
3) Develop an appreciation of the history of France, French and Francophone`s lifestyle, habits, history, and traditions.
4) Develop a thorough understanding and critical appreciation of the notion of secularism, fraternity, equality, freedom, and make comparisons with their own cultures and traditions and spheres of cultural reference.
授業の概要
PPTs, handouts, documents, authentic activity sheets on different learning platforms will be prepared by the teacher. Those need to be downloaded, saved, and organised in proper folders by the students. As a guideline that would allow opportunities for adjustments depending on the demands of the dynamic nature students` learning, needs and level of engagement with the curriculum, here is how the textbook Spirale will be divided:

French I Spirale Pages 1 to 20
French II Spirale Pages 20 to 39
French III Spirale Pages 39 to 52
French IV Spirale Pages 52 to 80
French Language and Culture A Spirale Pages 80 to 100
French Language and Culture B Spirale Pages 100 to 115

Reference to the grammar section at the back of the book will often be made in each level of French taught. Reference to previous topics will often be made as the course progresses.

Students should be able to comprehend and respond with increasing proficiency to spoken and written French, demonstrate nuanced cultural awareness and develop an appreciation of the relevance of analytical and critical thinking in French. There will be 13/14 face-to-face lessons. Students are expected to take ownership of learning; it is important that they complete the set tasks for each lesson and come to each lesson with adequate preparation and clear intent to learn.

Pre-requisites:

In principle, students who decide to study French Language, Society and Culture A would have studied French for four quarters or have had a comparable/equivalent experience in learning French from study abroad programs and/or self-study. The students should have developed an intermediate to advanced level of proficiency in French. Students needing extra support in terms of consolidation exercises or extension work are encouraged to talk to the teacher. This course focuses on the critical elements of the French language and culture. Upon completion, students should be able to comprehend and respond with increasing proficiency to spoken and written French, demonstrate nuanced cultural awareness, and develop an appreciation of the relevance of critical thinking in French (and more broadly Western) humanist traditions of learning. They will learn to become confident language learners who can be risk-takers and will be able to compare their own cultures and cultural spheres of reference (Japanese and/or others) with those of France and the Francophone world.

A minimum of 70% attendance rate must be achieved throughout the course. Two unjustified lateness will also count as absence. Students must maintain sound work ethics throughout the whole duration of the course. Students must take ownership of their learning.
