授業の到達目標及びテーマ
This course requires a lot of reading. The reading will often be challenging. It will often require more than one pass (i.e., reading the same text more than once). A student’s understanding of the readings will reflect their preparation (i.e., the number of times the student reads, the notes that they took, etc.). The better prepared, the better the student will be at discussing the course content, the more points they will receive for participation.

Students are encouraged to read outside of the text. Each textbook chapter includes further reading suggestions, and students who use these suggestions will gain a deeper understanding of the conceptual aims of this class.

The class will also have a Final Writing Assignment. For the assignment, students will need to demonstrate their knowledge of the course content.
授業の概要
The aim of this course is to develop students’ understanding of linguistics to give firm base for EFL & ESL instruction. The course will cover basic principles of speech production, including Classic Phonetics and contemporary theories. The course will then focus on speech perception, including active and passive forms, roles of listeners, and both current and past theories of perception.

The course has a academic listening (processing) bent, focusing finally on teaching and researching listening. Through looking at this skill, other aspects of research and language acquisition will be highlighted.
