This course is designed for students who have never studied Japanese before, or for students who are deemed appropriate for this course by the placement test. The goal of this course is to be able to understand spoken Japanese at a natural speed and to communicate naturally in Japanese. From the beginning, you will be exposed to spoken Japanese at a natural speed. In addition to pronunciation and intonation, the course emphasizes the understanding and appropriate use of Japanese language structures. You will be required to memorize vocabulary prior to class. You will also be required to do extended exercises.

This course is designed to give you the opportunity to make the most of your opportunity to speak and interact in Japanese. Accordingly, your transition from textbook Japanese to more practical "survival" Japanese will be guided by both the Genki course textbook and the materials we will prepare for the Survival Japanese lessons. Beginning with Genki, you will review basic grammar and useful expressions that will help establish a foundation for using your Japanese outside of class and in the Survival Japanese class.
The Survival sections/periods, consisting of Restaurant, Home Stay and Hotel Japanese, will be useful to you not only during your stay, but throughout your study of the language for years to come. This course also requires online assignments. Each assignment has a one-week due date, so you can submit them at any time during the week. Just make sure you remember to turn them in.
