Students will learn how to integrate the basic structures and vocabulary, which they learned previously so that they can comprehend reading materials and perform various communicative functions. They will study new structures and vocabulary necessary to enhance their language skills. Although aural/oral skills are continuously emphasized, an increased amount of reading and writing will also be required. Students are expected to participate fully in classroom activities and discussions.

This course is designed for students who have completed the Fundamentals of Japanese C course or for students who have passed the placement test. The goal of this course is to be able to understand spoken Japanese at a natural speed and to communicate naturally in Japanese. In this class, students will learn more complex grammatical patterns, etc. in preparation for the intermediate level of Japanese they will study after this class. In addition to pronunciation and intonation, the course emphasizes the understanding and appropriate use of Japanese language structures. You will be required to memorize vocabulary prior to class. You will also be required to do extended exercises.
This course is designed to give you the opportunity to make the most of your opportunity to speak and interact in Japanese. Accordingly, your transition from textbook Japanese to more practical "survival" Japanese will be guided by both the Genki course textbook and the materials we will prepare for the Survival Japanese lessons. Beginning with Genki, you will review basic grammar and useful expressions that will help establish a foundation for using your Japanese outside of class and in the Survival Japanese class.
The Survival sections/periods, consisting of Restaurant, Home Stay and Hotel Japanese, will be useful to you not only during your stay, but throughout your study of the language for years to come. This course also requires online assignments. Each assignment has a one-week due date, so you can submit them at any time during the week. Just make sure you remember to turn them in.
