授業の到達目標及びテーマ
Intercultural communication, as an academic field, focuses on the importance of culture in everyday life and examines the interrelationship and effects it has on communication processes. It aims to increase students’ intercultural competence, which is an essential skill for success in any field in a highly-globalized world. Furthermore, it will provide students the tools needed to be able to promote intercultural communicative competence in second or foreign language classrooms.
授業の概要
In this course, students will be introduced to basic concepts and theories in the field that would help them understand how communication processes differ among cultures, identify challenges from such differences, and find ways to address such problems.

This is a reading-intensive course. Students are expected to have read the assigned chapters before coming to class, and be able to participate in discussions about the readings. This course also involves case studies, presentations, and reflection activities that are all aimed at demonstrating the connection between theory and everyday life, and train students to formulate practical solutions to real-life intercultural communication issues.
