The 2008 Great Financial Crisis and the devastating outbreak of COVID-19 have demonstrated that the macroeconomic fluctuations play much more critical roles in shaping our lives than ever before.

In this class, we will read a standard macroeconomics textbook to acquire the basic framework to understand the economy as a whole. Through the lens of short-run, long-run, and the very long-run perspectives, the questions to be discussed in classes include:

- Why have some countries experienced rapid income growth while others have been trapped in poverty?
- Why do some countries have high inflation rates while prices of other countries have been kept constant?
- Why do all countries experience recessions—falling output and rising unemployment but some government policies effectively reduce their frequency and severity?

Content:
After successfully completing this lecture series, students are expected to be able to "think like an economist" through:
1. understanding the basic macroeconomic concepts and models,
2. applying the models to understand and interpret current and historical macroeconomic developments—inducting monetary and fiscal policy—and
3. making predictions about future macroeconomic events in both the world and Japanese economies.
