「動詞＋て＋補助動詞みる」（「てみる」）の文法的意味は「意図」と「行為」、「認識の更新」という三要素で構成される。そこから、二つの語用論的現象、つまり「てみると」と「てみたら」に続く節と「てみる」の直後の文が、「てみる」の意味に合わせて解釈できることと、「てみる」が助言と指示、挑戦を表すとき、ポライトネス理論のフェイス威嚇の緩和と強化に貢献すること、を論じた。
