ボンディングの概念を、基本的感情と自己意識的感情から再定義し、12 歳までの子供 (胎児を含む) をもつ男女 4600人を対象に調査を行い親子の感情の尺度の開発をめざした。確認的因子分析、多母集団同時解析、項目反応理論を用い、幸福 、怒り 、恐怖 、悲しみ、嫌悪、恥、罪悪感、αプライド、βプライドの 9 つの領域で構成される43項目の尺度SPCＥが得られた。
