SHARING The Archaeology and the Anthropology of the Hunter-Gatherers, (The McDonald Institute of Archaeology,Cambridge University) *
From the beginning of 20th century, underground resource development and conservation movements have been done actively in Alaska. These activities have changed natural environment of traditional territory of indigenous people, and also affected their social circumstances to keep their tradition. These changes affected the social meaning of the traditional custom of food sharing and mutual help in indigenous societies of this area, as well as the form of their traditional rituals known as “the potlatch” and its social function. In this presentation, I review the history of the potlatch in the Gwich’in society to discuss change their social function from expression of their traditional clan structure to the showcase of their way of sharing and mutual help.
