In the age of more focus on adult learners at Japanese tertiary education, this paper presented the views of students taking a non-credit language extension course at a Kanto university. Such courses provide universities with outreach to the local community and promote the reputation of the university. Such adult learners appreciate the sense of community the classes bring as much as they do the content of their studies.
