This paper discusses the different ways extensive reading has been used by one university as part of a compulsory English programme. Methods have included in-class reading, homework reading report books and voluntary out of class reading. One issue has been the way in which students often perceive ER as too simplistic and unrelated to TOEFL success. Comprehensive orientation to the programme is one way to ensure this problem can be overcome.
