Summary

Supplementary self study has been increasingly recognised as being important for students language development. In this study of 446 university students graded reading was linked to an increase in TOEFL score gain but also highlighted Nuttall's (1982) notion of virtuous circles of learning amongst motivated students. The research proposes that any such self study should be made a compulsory part of a language programme.
